To keep up with Facebook’s rapid growth, our engineering team is looking to hire the best and brightest people we can find. Today we’re announcing our plan to open an engineering office in Seattle, Washington. The Facebook Seattle office should be open this summer, and we’re looking for a handful of stellar engineers to form the initial team.

Over the last year, Facebook has grown at a faster pace than ever before. The engineering team faces the enormous challenge of serving our more than 400 million users, while also forging ahead with new features and innovations to expand the value people get from using Facebook. Today, despite having 20 times more users as we did three years ago, we still push code at least once a day and sometimes multiple times a day. Every engineer at Facebook has the unique chance to build something new and make a huge impact on how people around the world share and connect with their friends. With this opportunity comes the great responsibility and challenges of keeping the service fast and reliable, at an absolutely enormous scale.

Over the years, we’ve opened our platform, launched Facebook Connect, expanded solutions for advertisers and businesses, and recently announced the Open Graph protocol which enables any page on the Web to integrate with the social graph.

With each new phase of growth, we expand the impact of our employees: the ratio of users to engineers is over 1 million to one. As we grow to meet these challenges, we need to continue to attract the smartest, most talented technologists on the Internet. Seattle has a strong history of innovation and is home to thousands of talented technical people who we want to help us solve the challenges of designing and building the next generation of Facebook. To help recruit a local team of “super-star” engineers, we’re also announcing that Hadi Partovi will be joining Facebook in an advisory role. A serial entrepreneur who has worked with many of the groundbreaking companies on the Web, Hadi is a great addition to the Facebook team. I’m looking forward to working with him to get up to speed quickly in Seattle’s technical community and attracting the area’s top engineers.
